Neuroscience and Compassion

This episode looks at the connection between neuroscience and compassion, and examines whether new understandings in neuroscience can enable us to be more compassionate toward one another, as well as more effective in all areas of life. The guest is James R. Doty, M.D., Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at Stanford University, and founder and director of CCARE, the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education, which received its initial funding from the Dalai Lama. Dr. Doty is also an inventor, an entrepreneur, and the author of the new book “Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon’s Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart,” which describes how his bleak childhood of grinding poverty, family dysfunction, and dim prospects for the future turned around when he met a mysterious woman in a magic shop who set his life on a new course. Martin Wasserman hosts.
